Our new Solist Flugel horn has been a long time in the making. We have been searching for several years for a Flugel that 1.played well, 2. was built well & 3. was affordable. The problem is that we could never find one that met all 3 of these criteria... until now. The new Solist FL-565L is a GREAT playing entry level Flugel. It is a smaller bore at .433". This helps the player get that more focused true "Flugel sound" but is still big enough that makes it very easy playing. We opted to go for a brass bell so that the horn was lighter weight and balanced well, but did go for a red brass 1st branch to help warm up the sound. The horn uses Monel pistons with bottom springs. It features a 3rd valve trigger for intonation aid. Most importantly is how effortlessly this instrument plays. Most of the lower cost Flugels that we have auditioned in the past few years had a very bland, unrefined sound to them... not the true Flugel sound. This horn has it. We also make sure to put in a well made 7C mouthpiece. To be honest, we grab what we have available as the factory mouthpiece is poor. The Flugel photographed has a Conn 7C-FL mouthpiece in it. Every one of these horns will be fit with something equivalent, either Conn, Holton or FAXX. Retail:
