Super Action 80 Series II
Alto Sax | Series II Jubilee Alto
Sax |
Dave Kessler's Description
The Super Action 80 Series II
alto saxophone is still to this day,
the most popular (in production &
current use) professional Selmer
Paris Alto of all time. In
production since 1986, it is the
longest running production of a
Selmer Paris saxophone model. The
Series II is a solid horn in every
aspect. While many consider the
Series II more of a symphonic
saxophone, it is also a very
versatile horn, especially when
customized with alternate necks. In
fact, our best selling accessory for
the Series II is a Series III
Goldbrass alloy neck which adds more
focus and projection while
maintaining the dark and rich tone
of the II.
Revised in
2010 with the 125th "Jubilee"
Anniversary of Selmer, the Series II
is continued today with the
"Jubilee" Series cosmetic
enhancements. These changes replaced
the original Series II
configurations as of 2011. The
Series II alto is the most versatile
of the Selmer Paris Alto Saxophones.
If you are interested in a
non-Jubilee Series II alto, there
are very few left. Send an email to

Series III Alto Sax | Series
III Jubilee Alto Sax |
Dave Kessler's Description
The Series III was released in
1999 and was designed to be offered
in addition to the Series II. This
was the first time that Selmer
intentionally release a model with
the intent of making it a
supplemental model rather than
replacing a former model as has been
the previous method of releasing a
new model. The Series III features a
tighter bore that gave better
projection and response than the
Series II and giving a brighter
tone. The Series III also uses a
lighter weight construction with
Selmer's "mini-rib" (a.k.a
"split-rib") design.
Revised in
2010 with the 125th "Jubilee"
Anniversary of Selmer, the Series III
is continued today with the
"Jubilee" Series cosmetic
enhancements. These changes replaced
the original Series III
configurations as of 2011.

Reference 54 |
Dave Kessler's Description
Released in 2003 (tenors
released in 2001), the Reference 54
was the completion of the modern
Selmer alto design concepts. Selmer
had gone from being a manufacturer
who made only 1 professional model
saxophone to making concurrently 3
different models of alto saxophone.
Selmer realized that players wanted
more options and wanted these
playing options with the quality
provided by Selmer Paris. The Series
II and Series III are both great
modern horns, but many players still
wanted the tonal performance of the
1950's vintage Selmers. For the alto
specifically, the Mark VI.
The Reference 54 gains its name as
they refer to 1954, the year Mark VI
production started, as their
inspiration for the tone and playing
characteristics for the Reference 54
alto. The end result is a horn that
has the vintage style tonal "core"
of the Mark VI but with the
mechanical design and intonation of
a modern horn.
Overall, we
find that the Reference 54 is a
great horn. However, the new bore of
the Reference 54 does not lend
itself towards Classical music. The
Reference is the ultimate
Jazz/Funk/Blues/Rock/Fusion/etc...
alto and for that use, there is no
better horn! If someone is seeking
the Reference style performance but
needs the versatility for classical
use, we recommend in stead the
Series II with the Series III
Goldbrass neck. This combination
gives performance very close to the
Reference but also provides the
classical ability of the stock
Series II setup. |
