We got a chance to play the new Series III bari prototype back in January of 2008. It was hands down, the most impressive bari sax we have ever played. Selmer has focused on making this horn EXTREMELY responsive, as response is a big issue on a low A bari. They did this by making the horn lighter weight in its mechanisms. The final production horn is identical to the prototype we played in 2008. The horn's sound and response was fantastic. The instrument had a focus to the sound with a lot of color and presence but had much more responsiveness than previous Selmer horns (yes, we did compare up against a great SBA and Mark VI). The Series III really held its own and was somewhere in between the performance of the SBA and Mark VI baris that were tested. Not quite as dark as the Mark VI, but definitely had more focus and edge to its sound. The intonation on the new Series III bari sax is absolutely fantastic. Ergonomics are also great. Selmer has also introduced a new floor peg option... however they have done it in a way that adds very little weight as well as eliminates the damage risk that floor peg mounts pose.
